I love snow and animated snow. This snow tutorial will show you how to make animated snow simply using PSP. If you are wanting to use a java applet for snow, please see my tutorial here for a snow applet.

1. Select an image with snow on the ground, a jpg or bmp works best.
2. Open your image in Paint Shop. If you need to resize it..now is the time to do it. To resize your image...go to edit at the top menu bar. Scroll down and select image resize, and choose a workable size. I would suggest around 250 X 250 or less. Any larger and after the animation is added, it will take longer to download. The one shown here is larger for illustration purposes. Now choose the color of your snowflakes, in the upper right corner of right side menu there are 2 color squares. Left click on the first one "Foreground Color" and select white to a very off white shade and then click ok.

3. After resizing, again on the top menu bar of Paint Shop Pro, go to "Selections" and choose "duplicate" from the drop down menu. Duplicate your picture 2 to 3 times. This will give your 3 or 4 pictures. You will need all these to work with. Minimize all but the first image.

4. Now, choose your "paintbrush" tool from the tool bar along the left side of Paint Shop. Your settings as follows:
Shape: round
Size: 1
Hardness: I use 7, but up to 10 looks good. Opacity: 100
Step: 21
Density: 100

5. Using your paintbrush, place small dots in a path diagonally, but randomly not following a specific line, all the way across the picture from top to bottom. These are your "snowflakes". Don't worry if your lines are not straight, it's best if they are not and are somehwat "crooked" in your rows. It makes your snowfall after animation a little more realistic.

6. After you have done the first one, go to "Layers" across the top, and select "merge all". Now minimize this picture.
7. Activate your next picture by clicking maximizing it. Repeat the procedure. Do this for the remaining pictures. For a variation and to give it a more realistic "snowfall" effect, on one of these pictures, I use the last one, you can place the "snowflakes" in rather random spiral or circular patterns on the picture. Again when done, promote it to a layer if needed and merge.
8. Save all 4 pictures as psp files. Name them whatever you have decide to call your picture. "Snoscene1.psp" and so on

Animating our Snow

Open the Animation Program while still in Paint Shop. Select "Animation Wizard" and set as follows:
Place a dot in the box that says "same as first image" if it is not already marked. Click "next"
Select "Transparent" and click "next"
Select "centered in the frame" by placing checking the box.
The choose "With the preceeding frames contents" and leave the box at the bottom that says "Scale frames to fit" checked with a dot in the box. Then click "next".
Select "Yes run the animation indefinitely", then where it asks you how long you want it to be displayed..set this at 30 as a lower number makes the snowfall too fast and doesn't look realistic. Click "next"
Now choose each image you are using for this animation. ONE AT A TIME IN THE ORDER you created them from where ever you have them saved. Load ALL 3 or 4 images into the box. Then click next. (I have a separate file just for psp files when making animations to make them easy to find without digging around a lot.)
When the Wizard has your animation completed, it will show as frames. Minimze that window with the frames, and go to "View" at the top menu bar. You should see your completed animation. If you are happy with it, save it, and name it whatever you would like. If you want to resize..now is the time to do that by selecting "animation" from the top menu bar and resizing it if you need, then saving it that way when you are happy with it.

If you like this page layout, the four border background, it's not as hard as it seems. (Look, NO TABLES!) You can get the code for this CSS background border design and others at BigBaer.com
